Artist Spotlight: Utku S.

If someone asked you what the Republic of Turkey was known for these days – what would you say? Personally, two things come to mind: Deron Williams moving there to play basketball during the NBA lockout and a man named Utku S. If you haven’t heard of this guy and you like Electro-House, you’re in for a treat.

At the beginning of the summer I was listening to Tiesto’s Club Life podcast and I noticed a song that had a nice drum fill and wobbling bass lines. Usually during each podcast there are a couple songs that stand out to me and this tune may have stuck with me the strongest since that time. The track was called “Party Days” by Pulseless, remixed by Utku S. Having never heard of the dude, I kept his unique name at the back of my head, anxiously awaiting more tracks. I knew he had to be something special if Tiesto deviated outside his normal House and Trance selections to play something a little more aggressive.

Unfortunately Utku S. remains a bit mysterious as far as biographical information is concerned. What I can tell you is that he has clearly been hard at work over the past year, judging by the four pages of tunes up on his Soundcloud. Additionally, he just released “Complextro” which is a sample package that producers can use to “rock the dance floor” (the description goes on to say Featuring a huge collection of heavy sidechained fat bass loops, wicked top grooves, vintage synths, analog bass multisamples, groovy drum loops even construction kits… It’s about to lock you in your studio!).

Utku S. has released tracks for labels such as LOT49, BugEyed Records, Big Fish Recordings, Plasmapool, Tapestop Music and more. He also is the head of Tapestop Music and Ventuno Recordings.

Knowlton Walsh - Cycledrome Ep!

Knowlton Walsh has been a staple in the New England dance scene for almost 10 years. Honing his skills in Florida he came home to Providence in 2003 bringing a new flavor to the Rhode Island house scene. Recently he has become well known on the electro front for his collaborations with Hot Pink Delorean, as well as his single 'Animal' which garnered international recognition as well as heavy rotation on the Music Choice network. Previous releases and remixes on Nosi Music have put him alongside B Rich, Thee-O, Tony Gamboa, and Bitwise.

Future Music Review: Utku S. - Electro House Producer

A highly eclectic and unusual set of loops and hits. While obviously 'Electro' in intention there's more than a little Tribal and Ethnic going on here, adding an exotic flavour to the more straight-laced face of European House. Tunes take on a shuffling, percussion-lead flavour with these loops, which while highly technical rely on conventional physical percussion alongside the more familiar and riotous synth elements. That said there are literally hundreds of snatched synth bursts and Ravey 5th megachords that'll blow your ironic moustache clean off. And watch out for some stunning, buzzing bass sounds. Ouch!

Hi Utku S. !

Can you please tell I readers a little bit about yourself and your background in the industry?


I was born in Istanbul, Turkey. I worked as a professional bass guitarist until 2001. Then, I shifted to the electronic music world as a producer as well as a DJ especially performed in international events. I have already released over 200 tracks on well-known labels like Lot49, Plasmapool, Bugeyed Records and Big Fish Recordings. Since 2006, I have been running 3 labels; Ventuno Recordings, Plasticage Records and Tapestop Music. Recently, I turned my attention to sample production and now I'm exclusively working for Loopmasters

You’ve been working in sound design for over 10 years, what aspects interest you the most?

My initial aim was to create the samples/loops to use them while producing my own tracks. However, I decided to release them in an effort to inspire other music producers which I believe is the most interesting aspect for me.

What’s aspects do you find the hardest?

Creating a unique sound in each and every sample pack is the hardest aspect.

What is it about electro that does it for you?

Love the fat sounding bass lines, side-chained synth/chords of electro.

What elements do think makes for a high quality production?

The base of the high quality production of a track composes of an attractive arrangement, which makes the song flow. Mixing well and taking a professional approach to mastering is for sure to get the right sound.

How do you start a track? Is there any real method to the way you work?

I start with the kick drum, and I add the bass to create lock groove. My real method is to first complete the main verse of the track in-line with the main break-down & build-up and then continue with remaining verses in addition to intro and outro.

You’ve recently compiled a few sample packs for Loopmasters, how did this come about?

I knew that Loopmasters is a well-known sample pack company where I could have found the chance to reach large group of producers via releasing my packs for them. They appreciated my sample packs and our relation began.

What else have you got coming up in 2011?

There are couple of packs on the way to be released from Loopmasters; Dutch House, Discoteca, JustPunk (sounds like French disco i.e. Justice Duft Punk etc.). In addition, French Electro Mixtools Vol.2 will be released soon. Other than these, for sure new remixes, and rocking originals will come up. Keep following me :)

Lavora nella sua stanza con il suo stile creativo di miscelazione e di programmazione, sa molto bene ciò che la gente vuole sentire, come funziona un sound innovativo, quello che il pubblico più esigente richiede. Quest'anno ha deciso di condividere la sua abilità unica con altri produttori. Ha fatto un accordo con "Loopmasters (UK)", una delle società leader nel settore della musica. Oltre alla carriera da produttore e dj, Utku S è un bassista professionista con una carriera passata di 15 anni grazie alla quale ha avuto la possibilità di lavorare con numerosi artisti di fama internazionale. Ma non basta, Utku S. è anche un imprenditore di successo. Ha formato la sua prima etichetta dal suono breakbeat, la Plasticage Records nel 2005. Oggi si sta dedicando alla Ventuno Recordings dal 2007, etichetta indipendente, specializzato in musica elettronica che spazia dall'electro, alla Trash, la danza Indie/Nu Disco e l' Electro-Rock.

Ad infiammare la dance-floor, come dicevamo, ci sarà anche Un:Code. Bolognese, ha suonato in vari festival underground di tutta l'Europa e, partendo dalle sonorità drum'n'bass e quelle breakbeat, è poi approdato anche lui all'electro. Organizzatore del Node Fest, ha suonato con Ellen Allien, Congo Natti, Utku S e molti altri.

La visual-art è in mano all'immancabile Dosojin, per la seconda volta accompagnato da Federico Amaterasu.

La ciliegina sulla torta? La street-art expo di HOPNN che ci vestirà a festa.
